The Justice
Today, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was laid to rest in Washington D.C. after passing away late last week.
Justice Ginsburg was a trailblazer, a cultural icon, and a fervent advocate for social equality. She served for 27 years on the Supreme Court, the second woman in history to do so, and successfully fought for the rights of women throughout her career.
While serving on the Supreme Court, she famously persuaded the courts that the 14th Amendment guarantee of equal protection applied not just to racial and ethnic minorities, but to women as well. She was also the first female tenured professor at Columbia Law School, and founded the Women's Rights Project at the American Civil Liberties Union.
To honor the life and legacy of this tremendously influential woman, Della Terra mixologist Chris Mears concocted “The Justice”, made with Maggies spiced rum and charcoal black tea simple syrup, complete with a sugared rim to mirror the robe and collar of Supreme Court judges.
“We are happy to make a cocktail for such an iconic woman,” says Michelle Moletz of Della Terra.
The cocktail will be on their menu for one week, with 10% of its proceeds going to the American Bar Foundation, an organization dedicated to the advacenment of justice through innovative, interdisciplinary, and rigorous empirical research on law, legal processes, and legal institutions. Justice Ginsburg was a decades-long supporter of the ABF and, prior to her nomination to the Supreme Court, she served on the ABF Board of Directors from 1979 to 1989.
Visit Della Terra to try “The Justice” and support the ABF, or make your own version of the cocktail at home and raise a glass to the “Notorious RBG”.
