John Derian started his decoupage studio in Greenwich Village in 1989, and his storefronts on East Second Street, Christopher Street, and Provincetown, Massachusetts, are a trove of articulate creativity, imaginative design and tender upcycling.
He and a small cast of helpers are still making intricate and exuberant plates and platters by hand, but John has also branched out into collaborations with others. The durable, washable placemats shown here, released recently by Chilewich, capture his decoupage patterns of spring and early summer flora in subtle colors that work year-round.
